SOTT Focus

Well, it looks like something fishy is going on with a topic that has been in the news for quite awhile now: deaths due to Tasers.

We begin our little story with an article from NorthCountryGazette.org:

Pinellas County Taser Deaths - Excusable Or Not?

June Maxam
North Country Gazette
7 May 2008

Between June 2001 and June 2007, there were at least 245 cases of deaths of subjects soon after having been shocked using Tasers. Of these cases, in seven cases, medical examiners said tasers were a cause or a contributing factor or could not be ruled out as a cause of death.

In 16 cases, coroners and other officials stated that a taser was a secondary or contributory factor of death.

In dozens of cases, coroners cited excited delirium as cause of death. Excited delirium has been questioned as a medical diagnosis.

Several deaths occurred as a result of injuries sustained in struggles. In a few of these cases, head injury due to falling after being shocked contributed to later death.

In 2005, a medical examiner ruled for the first time that a taser was the primary factor in a death. [...]

Fabulous. If you put the headline together with the text, it sounds like Pinellas County, FL is a veritable hotbed for Taser Deaths. So what's the big deal? The day after we posted this article under our Fair Use Policy, we received an e-mail as follows:

From: Sasha (at) acegm2.com
Date: 11-May-08

As a first time reader at SOT [sic], I found a story about my county in the headlines.

I was appalled. Your headline: Florida, US: At least 245 cases of tase deaths in Pinellas County

Then I went and looked at the original story from the North Country Gazette which states:

"Between June 2001 and June 2007, nationwide there were at least 245 cases of deaths of subjects soon after having been shocked using Tasers. Of these cases, in seven cases, medical examiners said Tasers were a cause or a contributing factor or could not be ruled out as a cause of death." [emphasis ours]

which is a FAR CRY from there being 245 cases of taser deaths in Pinellas County.

So now I doubt the integrity of your entire site...

Sasha

The problem here is that the word "nationwide" (bolded red text above) was not in the original article. So, was the article changed after we posted it, and then changed again to remove the word "nationwide"?

No. As it turns out, there are TWO articles. The first one is Death In Pinellas County - Excited Delirium Or Murder? This article, does, indeed, say:

Between June 2001 and June 2007, nationwide there were at least 245 cases of deaths of subjects soon after having been shocked using Tasers. Of these cases, in seven cases, medical examiners said Tasers were a cause or a contributing factor or could not be ruled out as a cause of death.

The second article, entitled Pinellas County Taser Deaths - Excusable Or Not? nowhere includes the word "nationwide." (We have taken a screenshot of it just in case it morphs!)

A bit of digging reveals that, according to Amnesty International, the 245 taser deaths were for the entire US, not just Pinellas County, Florida.

However, SOTT.net did not catch this error until after it was brought to our attention by Sasha. After all, the article we used was copy/pasted in toto, as it was and we were relying on the journalist who wrote it to at least have checked out the basic facts! In this case, not only did she not check out the basic facts, she did not even quote the article she was commenting on accurately! So, we must thank Sasha for bringing this to our attention. The end result was, of course, that the title of the article on the North Country Gazette site which is "Pinellas County Taser Deaths - Excusable Or Not?", and the content certainly does make it seem like the 245 deaths occurred in Pinellas County only.

After responding to Sasha and pointing out that the word "nationwide" is no longer (or perhaps never was) in the article text, we received another e-mail:

June Maxam, Publisher
North Country Gazette

Obviously, it seems highly likely that June Maxam didn't even bother to go to our web site to check out the placement and context or even the Fair Use notice (that sott.net is a research database). How do we know? Well, she included the SOTT link with the old title. After having the error pointed out to us by Sasha, we had changed the title to "US: At least 245 cases of taser deaths between June 2001 and June 2007". This suggests to us that someone alerted her to the fact that her work was being quoted, that it was wrong, and Ms. Maxam decided to do damage control.

Normally, we would simply point correspondents such as Ms. Maxam to our Fair Use Policy. In this case, however, we now think it's pretty safe to say that the article on the North Country Gazette is really not up to SOTT.net standards anyway, so we are happy to remove it. Again, we have to thank Sasha for that, though Sasha does not seem to be a happy camper. She wrote again today as follows:

Subject:Re: Not very happy with your site - MAJOR ERROR
IN YOUR HEADLINES
Date: Mon, 12 May 2008 09:22:26 -0400
From: sasha2
To: SOTT.NET

First of all, ANY "articles" from the North Country Gazette seem to be "commentaries" which means no one is reporting the facts. YOUR headline read that 245 deaths from tasers were in PINELLAS COUNTY - the other article says there are 245 deaths NATIONWIDE. LINK- who or what are they "commenting" on?

Since we have already dealt with this above, noting that there are TWO articles on the North Country Gazette website, Sasha is beating a dead horse here. But, she continues:

So who's irresponsible here? If you are "reporting the news" you need to report the news - not just quote some commentary or change the original content.

Again, we note that there are two articles as indicated above, so Sasha's charge that we changed the content is in error. She has not investigated very thoroughly before charging SOTT with malfeasance. She continues:

There is an article in the SP Times in August 2005 that reported ONE death IN PINELLAS and NO deaths in HILLSBOROUGH at that time from tasers. That article I consider to be accurate. So would that then mean that those 245 deaths occurred between 2005 and June 2007 (which I seriously doubt)? There would be an UPROAR in the SP Times had this been occurring. LINK

****Here is an Amnesty International article dated March 28, 2006 stating that there had been only 152 taser deaths IN THE UNITED STATES from June 2001 through Feb 2006. LINK

It seems that they are the agency diligently tracking these deaths. In fact, they report 290 deaths in the UNITED STATES as of late 2007. LINK

What I am saying here is that on a first visit to your site, I have found a "sensational" headline that would cause any sane, logical person to question the credibility of ANY of the content in your site(s). All COMMENTARIES from North Country are suspect and need to be investigated unless they take one to an original report done by a credible entity.

There is certainly enough bad crap going on the world without you having to make it appear to be worse.

Sasha

Sasha is certainly entitled to her opinion about SOTT, however, as we have noted above, there is a quite simple explanation for the problem: there are two items on the referenced website, Sasha was reading one, and we had included the other on SOTT. And, for the record, as our regular readers already note, we do not just report news, we also carry a great deal of commentary.

In the end, what we can say with a high degree of certainty is that taser deaths are a serious problem in our pathocratic world, and we'll continue to bring you any news and commentary we find on the topic.

For all our readers concerned with any potential decrease in accuracy here on SOTT.net, rest assured that the editor who posted this article has agreed to exile in Siberia.

For the time being, just type "taser" in the Search box above, and you'll get plenty of food for thought! SOTT doesn't need to try to make things appear to be worse than they really are. We might also mention that it is knee-jerk reactions like Sasha's that create many of those problems. Sorry SOTT.net doesn't suit you - don't let the door hit you on the way out.

UPDATE! June Maxam of North Country Gazette is, indeed, trying to do damage control. She has written another email to SOTT:

To Whom It May Concern:

There is nothing wrong with my work and if you'd stop stealing it, you wouldn't have a problem with people read something into things that aren't there. There was absolutely no indication that there had been 245 deaths from tasering in Pinellas County. You do not have permission to reprint my work. Don't do it again.

Well, aside from the bad grammar, I guess that Ms. Maxam doesn't have any interest in a wider readership for her work with direct links to her site. That's fine with us because we have put the North Country Gazette on the "banned list" of sites that SOTT will never link to because they don't make the cut. We are really picky. Flim-flam artists don't cut it with us.

Nevertheless, in view of Ms. Maxam's claim that "there is nothing wrong with my work," and her claim that people "read something into things that aren't there", and the fact that she HAS altered her article, we are reproducing here screenshots, before and after. The reader can make up their own mind about what is going on at North Country Gazette:

I hope Sasha has read this new article.
...also I hear Siberia is kinda warm this time of year.

Anyone seen the new Taser c2? It comes in 'shocking' pink, and even has an MP3 holster (presumably so you can drown out the screams). If you ever get shocked by one, just remember the statement from the bottom of there 'benefits' section. "Your life is worth more to us than the cost of a TASER device." Only $349.99

North Country Gazette Very Weird Site By Christx11

The site that had the original stories is very strange. I don't know whether to classify it as unprofessional or what. I also saw that the original article had no mention whatsoever of the word nationwide. But now it does. The author of the article at 'North Country Gazette' is apparently trying to pull something over on someone. The original has been edited and updated, yet the timestamp on the article has not changed! Very fishy. I guess someone's ego can't take responsibility for their own errors and they must reinforce their own self-image of infallibility.

On top of that the site is just strange. There seems to be no way to publicly comment on anything the site puts out. Everything appears to be behind the scenes without any accountability. And on top of it the place is plastered with copyright warnings that are ridiculous. They want you to tag their articles to social websites, but nothing can be reproduced anywhere without written permission. Yet the very restrictions stated are broken even by Google.

Quote from northcounty_org
You may not (whether directly or through the use of any software program) create a database in electronic or structured manual form by regularly or systematically downloading and storing all or any part of the pages from this site. No part of the Site may be reproduced or transmitted to or stored in any other web site, nor may any of its pages or part thereof be disseminated in any electronic or non electronic form, nor included in any public or private electronic retrieval system or service without ‘ prior written permission from the publisher of The North Country Gazette.
End Quote

The site looks like one person's personal ego trip - June Maxam. Searching the NET I see other sites that have had run ins with June Maxam, even to the point of her being reported to authorities for her threats -

_[Link]
This person seems to be on some kind of personal ego crusade placing herself as the end all, be all of investigative journalism, yet I have found several stories by her that appear to have been irresponsible on her part, because she did not get the facts straight. For someone promoting themselves as such a reputable jounalist her behavior is really suspect.

Looks to me like someone that may be in that psychologically 'affected' class that everyone should probably stay away from. That damage or affectation may be secondary from her own exposure to psychologically damaging events, but either way, the entire site and June herself appear to be very NASTY.

I knew taking a screen shot of the article was a good idea. As soon as I figure out how to convert it from mdi format to something a bit more web friendly, I'll upload it.

Yes indeedy, Ms. Maxam has been caught with her hand in the cookie jar.

Ego By Anart
Anart

Looks like an ego issue on Maxam's part - had she just noted on the article that she had made a mistake and edited it, all would have been understood. Self-importance will getcha every time. (assuming there is no pathology at work)

As far as the 'Sasha' component - that's just odd - she seems awfully emotionally invested in something that really has nothing to do with her - wonder if she has a previous beef with Maxam or is just one of those 'easily offended' types - again - that old Self-Importance...

She Thinks She Owns The Stories She Writes About By Gotnoscript

Apparently, she thinks she's the only one who can write about a story:
[Link]
---
'The North Country Gazette is a New York-based web site run by June Maxam. Since Terri's death, NCG has published numerous lengthy articles investigating key players in the debate -- including Michael Schiavo, Judge George Greer and other Florida officials who paved the way to Terri's death.

Those articles have been helpful. Unfortunately, NCG has been repeatedly attacking LifeNews.com and other news sites that report on the aftermath of the debate about Terri.

Maxam's antics began when, in 2006, LifeNews.com posted a well-written editorial she penned concerning Michael's political action committee and his efforts to defeat pro-life politicians who supported Terri and her parents.

Irate that LifeNews.com would afford her column a wider distribution, Maxam emailed a scathing letter asking that the column be removed. We complied immediately.

In an email exchange afterwards, Maxam made it very clear she was not supportive of Terri Schiavo or her parents' efforts to protect her life. Though she had written strong investigative pieces concerning the major players, she appeared to be more interested in the investigative journalism than the cause of protecting disabled people like Terri.

Maxam also publicly indicated she is not pro-life and, in a post on her web site attacking LifeNews.com, wrote, "We are not affiliated with any pro-life [or] right to life group" and added "His causes are not necessarily ours" referring to LifeNews.com's support for Terri and her family.

In emails to LifeNews.com and public posts on her web site, Maxam also made it clear she has contempt for other pro-life news sources that cover the Terri Schiavo saga. It appears Maxam wants a stranglehold on reporting on Terri and the debate that still exists about euthanasia that received national prominence because of her plight.

When told that news sources like WorldNetDaily, CNS News, NewsMax and others have been extensively reporting on Terri, she accused them of taking away her readership and claimed they sometimes plagiarized her web site.

Maxam said it's "incredulous" to see other news outlets cover Terri Schiavo.'

...

Maxam wrote previously that when other web sites publish news stories about Terri Schiavo "it obviously directs readers and potential patrons of our advertisers away from The North Country Gazette and adversely affects our statistics for daily readership and ultimately affects potential income."
---

So she doesn't care about the issues. It's just that she wants to be the only one reporting them so that she can make more money.

At the end we see it is June or at least an IP associated with June that is posting as at least 4 different identities dishing out nonsense and threats and abuse. Sounds To Me Like Sasha By Joe
Joe

should apply for a job at "Taser Corp", since she seems so vexed that Tasers are getting such bad press, and in her very own Pinellas county!

In fact, maybe she should think about hosting one of these:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7390607.stm

Taser parties a growing US Trend

In a downtown loft apartment in Denver, Colorado, a group of 30-something women is having a party. They joke easily with each other about men, cats and botox.

It's more Sex and the City than Psycho, but party organiser Dana Shafman would have them believe they could easily be victims of violent crime.

She runs a company that sells Tasers, the electric stun guns used by security forces around the world.

In Colorado and other US states, it's legal for ordinary people to own them. Dana's marketing them to women as the ideal personal protection device.

"I've been to everyone's Avon-type tupperware-style parties, purse parties, clothing parties, boutique parties and I felt like why not have a self-defence party?"

'Take it to the gym'

She gives a presentation, including worrying crime figures for Denver.

This is an unusual party, to say the least - there's food, but no alcohol, and much of the time is spent listening to disturbing statistics

But she also goes on to show off the different colours that are available (bright red, soft pink and electric blue are all on display) and the fashionable accessories you can buy, including a carrying pouch made of fake leopard-print fur. [...]

Perhaps people who actually feel upset about the bad and so called "unjustified" rep tasers are getting might want to consider joining the "Nephlim Corp" in the 'future'? Just a hypothetical and inspiring idea I read somewhere, which stated that Nephlims were also quite fond of using taser like weapons to enforce the will of their masters. Well, of course, not that Sasha truly feels that way about tasers and their current use of enforcing the will of certain so called "democratic" rulers! She only seems to be upset about the already clarified mistake, which I think in her haste, missed the reading of?

This June person is something. This is what I found on one of the links posted by Laura:

[Link]"I’ve had several conversations lately about sociopaths and the law, and Ms. Maxam is almost a text book example of that kind of behavior, IMHO. I have no desire to squelch her voice, after all free speech is free speech, but the larger issue of what is news, and the responsibilities of the fifth estate are a huge issue. I would have trouble taking anything her organization publishes seriously."

Go check the website. The article has been altered more drastically than ever before...

Title now reads "Death in Pinellas County -- Excited Delirium or Murder?"

And the article reads entirely differently then either the before or after. What a bizarre woman. I think she just wants attention but doesn't realize it?

Still no change in time stamp or note of editing.

Interesting Behavior... By General chaos
General chaos

For one who sends threats to everyone who disagrees with her. I send an e-mail to June Maxam basically saying that I find her style of "reporting" to be self indulgent, harmful and misleading, and that I would personally research her and her actions as a "journalist" and do some investigative reporting of my own to any and all that would listen in the hopes of keeping innocent sheeple from taking anything she writes as truth without first researching for themselves. I said that in my opinion, she's a hack, etc. etc.

What did she do? sent a complaint to my e-mail server saying that I had spammed her. I swear to god, I never once tried to sell her a thing. I just informed her without a single obsene word that I am aware of just how full of shit she is, and I was going to let anyone who would listen know, so as to avoid the embarrassment of taking her seriously. And she tattled. Told Yahoo lies about my e-mail. Probably edited it and sent an altered copy. I laughed my ass off. What a freaking narcisist! wow.
