The Living Planet

A minor girl was killed and 20 others were injured in separate incidents of wall and roof collapse during the overnight rains and thunder-squall that lashed the national capital.

There were at least four incidents of wall and roof collapse as showers and strong winds with a speed of 100 km per hour hit the city on Saturday night.

Reports of uprooting of trees and power cuts were also received from several areas of the city. The Met Office recorded a rainfall of 7.7 mm till Sunday morning.

The rains, however, brought down the mercury, giving some relief to citizens. The cloud cover hovering over the capital also brought down the maximum temperature to 37.6 degrees Celsius from Saturday's 41.8 degrees.

The minimum temperature recorded on Sunday morning was 24.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.

Eight-year-old Soni died when the roof of the house in Mohan Garden area gave in as showers accompanied by lightning and strong winds with a speed of 100 km per hour hit the city on Saturday night.

Six others sustained minor injuries in the incident and were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

In the second incident, six persons suffered minor injuries when the wall of a house collapsed in a slum cluster Mubarakpur in outer district.

Fire officials attributed the reason for collapse to strong winds and weak building material.

The third incident was reported from Dwarka locality when a balcony of a house collapsed, injuring five persons.
