Connecting the Dots: The Axis of Evil Steps on the Bear's Tail Under a Nuclear Fallout
SOTT editors
SOTT Tue, 02 Sep 2008 04:55 EDT
While the world slept through the month-long cyclic dream of the Olympic Games, the Axis of Evil took the opportunity to move its pieces onto Russia's doorstep. The Eastern bear responded, and the US/UK/Israeli propaganda machine went into overdrive. As usual, ordinary people paid a heavy price for this deadly game of global chess. |

Signs Economic Commentary for 1 September 2008
Donald Hunt
SOTT.net Mon, 01 Sep 2008 17:09 EDT
The recent rise of the dollar has been attributed to evidence that the rest of the world is entering a recession and that the downturn will not be limited to the United States. It has also been fueled by an export-based mini-recovery in the United States. A recent revision of U.S. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) number showing a 3.5% annualized growth rate in the second quarter of 2008 shows the results of both the growth in exports from the United States and the effects of the tax rebate checks being spent in the economy. Both, however, cannot last, as the checks have already been spent and the dollar is now rising (it was the low dollar that fueled exports). So, while a little good news is always welcome, we're not out of danger, by any means. The drop in the price of gold this summer has made all currencies seem stronger, but what is really behind it all? |

Who Wants To Be CEO of a Red, White and Blue Kakistocracy*?
Richard Sauder, PhD Sun, 31 Aug 2008 21:08 EDT ©2008 All Rights Reserved. Contact author for permission to repost or mirror *Kakistocracy is government by the very worst, least principled, and most incompetent people. You will be forgiven for thinking that the word, kakistocracy, perhaps derives from the word, "caca", itself derived from the Latin, "cacare". In fact, kakistocracy derives from the Greek, kakos, meaning "bad".) Let me make myself clear from the outset: I am not running for President of the United States, I just am *not doing* it, though I am constitutionally fully qualified, and, truth to tell, would be much better for the country in many ways, on many levels, than the current, thug occupant of the White House (notice that I do not refer to him as "President"). But, no, I really and truly do not aspire to be President of this godforsaken Kakistan masquerading as the USA. Now that that crucial non-announcement is out of the way, permit me to set forth a couple of the many reasons for my subdued, cyberspace non-campaign for the Oval Office. |

Inside The LC: The Strange but Mostly True Story of Laurel Canyon and the Birth of the Hippie Generation Part X
Dave McGowan
Center for an Informed America Fri, 29 Aug 2008 23:40 EDT "By the time Manson shifted base from Rustic Canyon to an old ranch in Chatsworth, he'd begun formulating the notion that he and his followers had to prepare themselves for a race war with Black America."
In this outing, we will be temporarily leaving Laurel Canyon. But don't worry; we won't be traveling far, and we'll be returning soon enough. Today we will be exploring Rustic Canyon, which lies about nine miles west of Laurel Canyon. It was there, in Lower Rustic Canyon, that Beach Boy Dennis Wilson lived in what Steven Gaines described in Heroes and Villains as "a palatial log-cabin-style house at 14400 Sunset Boulevard that had once belonged to humorist Will Rogers." The expansive home sat on three landscaped acres of gently rolling hills.
In the summer of 1968, as is fairly well known, Charlie Manson and various members of his entourage moved in with Wilson. "Tex" Watson, curiously enough, was already living there. As many as two-dozen members of Manson's clan spent the entire summer there, with Wilson picking up the tab for all expenses. The Mansonites (mostly nubile young women) regularly drove Wilson's expensive cars and demolished at least one of them. Dennis didn't seem to mind; he was busy recording Manson in his home studio and inviting fellow musicians, like Neil Young, over to the house to hear Charlie perform (Young was so impressed that he urged Mo Ostin to sign him). Dennis would later claim that he had destroyed all the Manson demo tapes, that he remembered almost nothing of his time with Charlie and the Family, and that he certainly knew nothing about the Tate and LaBianca murders, which were committed in the summer of 1969, about a year after the Family had vacated the Rustic Canyon residence.

The Dumb, the Stupid, the Clueless and the Uninformed
Les Visible
Smoking Mirrors Thu, 04 Sep 2008 16:49 EDT I've been away for awhile... maybe a month or more... maybe I've always been away and just drop in on occasion with a new personality for the next period of engagement. It's hard to know what's what. Look at the problem people have with reality. They must have a problem with it because they will accept anything but it, and they generally prefer to be told what is happening rather than look into the situation themselves. By the title of this piece and by your own observations, I guess you know I'm talking about significantly more than half of the population. I've long been of the opinion that all of the great and transformative acts for good that are practiced on this Earth are accomplished by ten percent of the people. I've also felt that the majority of evil is accomplished by another ten percent. The people in the middle are the hamburger meat in the fast food restaurant of the times in which we live. Among this group are thirty six personality types and you meet them all as you go and long before you actually leave. There are a handful of unique characters who exemplify their time and there is a much larger group that plays a tape loop over and over again until it wears out. You could no more talk to these people about what is really going on than you could convince them that they have anything to do with it. |

Hope? Obama Might Pursue Criminal Charges Against Bush
Elana Schor
The Guardian Thu, 04 Sep 2008 05:28 EDT Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said yesterday that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November. Biden's comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin. But his statements represent the Democrats' strongest vow so far this year to investigate alleged misdeeds committed during the Bush years. "If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued," Biden said during a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to ABC. "[N]ot out of vengeance, not out of retribution," he added, "out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no attorney general, no president -- no one is above the law." |
